The Ethical Pivot

"I no longer believe in narrow OKRs or launches. The only product impact I care about now is the impact on society."

Héctor spent over a decade at the forefront of AI development, first building reasoning systems for Google’s Knowledge Graph and later working on responsible AI at Google Research. He was building a career at Google at the center of the AI revolution.

Watching his daughter Aurora’s early interactions with digital platforms, he recognized something unsettling: he was an AI expert who did not know how to protect his own child. That restlessness sent him back to Cambridge, where he completed a Master’s in AI Ethics and spent two years systematically questioning his assumptions. He arrived as a confident solutionist. He left as a critical technoptimist.

He returned from Cambridge ready to approach the work differently, only to find Google consumed by an AI arms race in which speed had eclipsed everything else. He had the tools, the knowledge, and the conviction. What he lacked was room to use them.

After a period of deliberate reflection and unlearning, he founded Tlanextli to pursue the work that mattered most to him: protecting human flourishing in the age of AI.
